Prologue

A lean, pretty cheetah was watching a tiger drinking water from the water-hole. She creeps further and aims her ees on him. Wiggling her body, she jumps, the tiger ffinding her on his back, rolling over.

"Hey, Vine!!" he protested. "Stop that, you heavy lump!!"

By now Vine was rolling over with laughter as she had pushed him in a nearby pool of mud. He was brown and sticky by now.

"Kobashi, you look so silly!!" she laughed, tears coming out of her eyes.

"Really? So take that!!" Kobashi grinned and flung a clump of mud. It hit her fance, and she spat out mud.

"Yuck! Take this then!" And she flung another clump of mud.

"You missed it!!" Kobashi yelled and suddenly they heard pawsteps. A female cheetah came up, sternly.

"Vinelia, how many times have I told you not to make yourself dirty? You are the daughter of the leader of this pack! You must be clean and a example to others."

"But, Mother-" Vinelia started.

"Go clean yourself up," her mother, Storm, ordered.

"Yes, Mother," Vine got up, polietly and went out.

"And you!" said Storm to Kobashi, who was looking after Vine, shocked. "You make her twice as bad! You're nothing but a mere trainee. Why do you go playing with her like a pup?"

"Well..." Kobashi began then said nothing but went out of the kind-of dell.

-Later-

Vine was in her den, near to tears. Kobashi came in.

"What's wrong, Vine? C'mon, you wouldn't cry like that, would you?" Kobashi teased. "Though I didn't much like your stepmother! Ugh!"

"And now my father's gone to fight too!" sobbed Vine. "Never mind... Sometimes a couple of stern words is just what I need." She wiped her tears and went out.

"Hey, Vinelia!!!" came a merry female voice, and a wolf of her age came. "What's up, you look woebegone."

"Nah, it's nothing," said Vine, happily. "So, how's your father, Fang? Back yet?"

"No! Not yet. He'll come back soon after hunting," said Fang.

"And exploring and wandering about," added Vine, laughing. Fang's father was always curious and interested in new things and often forgot what he came for.
